Doug has handled patent matters involving various technologies including telecommunications, semiconductors, networking, software and growing media. Representative clients include SanDisk, which he as represented both in the Federal Circuit and before the ITC, The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, Sendmail, and Molycorp.

At the request of Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro, Doug served as Ohio's state solicitor from 2002-2006. In that capacity, he argued before the United States Supreme Court and Ohio Supreme Court on a variety of issues, including the First Amendment, statutory interpretation, and the dormant Commerce Clause. Before that, he was a tenure-track professor at the Ohio State University, teaching courses in corporations, contracts, and law and economics. Since joining the Firm, Doug has acted as an adjunct professor at OSU.
